You, the temp hire, will agree to fill a position at a company for a finite period of time instead of becoming a permanent employee.
The contract (between you and the company, staffing agency, or both) will outline the expectations of the temporary position.
It will state the exact start and end dates of your job, along with all the other legal and technical details of your position.
How Long Is a Temp Job?
The bottom line is your temp job will last as long as the employer needs you. Some temporary jobs only last a few weeks, while others range from three to six months. The latter is more common.
With that said, it is uncommon in most industries for temp jobs to last longer than six months. If you’re still happily working together after that point, your temporary role will most likely become a temp-to-hire (permanent) job.
Keep in mind that sometimes you can cut your contract early if it isn’t a good fit or if you can no longer do the job. But read your agreement carefully to make sure.
How Long Does It Take to Get a Temporary Job?
You may be surprised. If placed with the right staffing and recruiting agency, you could be placed with a company in a week’s time. In some cases, it may take a month or longer.
How long it takes to land a temporary role will greatly depend on your skill set, experience, knowledge, and industry focus. Some industries have a greater demand for contract work than others.
Remember that the staffing company has no control over how soon you get placed. It’s up to the marketplace, client’s needs, and what is in demand.
What Is the Difference Between a Temp Job and a Part-Time Job?
People often confuse temporary roles with part-time roles, which is understandable. The two are similar in a sense. An organization can even have part-time temps, which adds to the confusion. But each role has distinct differences.
The difference between a temporary job and a part-time job usually lies in the benefits you will receive.
Since the temp work is for a finite timespan, you won’t receive any benefits or company perks that a permanent employee would get. That means no health care, dental coverage, maternity leave, or paid vacation.
Part-time employees do get to enjoy company benefits and perks, to a certain degree, depending on how the company divvies all that up. Even though the employee only works part time, they would still be considered a permanent employee because they are not under a finite contract.
Can Temp Workers Get Overtime Pay?
The short answer here is yes. Temporary workers can receive overtime pay if they work beyond the hourly range outlined in the contract. The FLSA extends this right.
Exempt positions, such as salaried roles that don’t rely on hours, may not receive overtime pay. But if you are non-expect (aka paid hourly), then the same wage and hour rules apply as if you were a permanent employee.
